video sessions

What kind of video can we do for you? This page serves as an outline for what we can offer you as well as an opportunity for us to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about video sessions at Cart.

video sessions

Cart Music video sessions are a series of live session videos. Our earliest sessions were recorded in a barn in Vermont, since then we’ve moved to our studio in West Philly. Every band or artist who does a session with us owns 100% of the final product, this means that once the recording is done, mixed, and the video is edited we send the final product to the band or artist for them to do whatever they like with.

  • The basic pricing for one of our sessions is $70 per song + $100 flat to cover studio costs. A one song session would cost $170, a two song session would be $240, etc.

  • we have a few different add-on services available depending one what you’re planning to do with the session.

    • raw multitrack audio of the entire session - $20 flat fee for the session

    • raw, unedited video footage from the shoot - $20 per song

    • mastering from Tony Aguilar; inquire for details! (examples)

    • additional videography and editing from Jonah Shortall (example)

    • photoshoot with Tam Stockton (examples)

Frequently Asked Questions

We have our own person for ____ can we just use them instead of one of your folks?

  • Most of the time yes! For things like mastering, audio mixing, and photoshoots during the sessions we’re happy for you to use your own people. The only exception is video shooting and audio recording during the session, this is simply to make sure things go as smoothly as possible. We do not offer discounts for someone other than us mixing the audio for your session.

What does the day of the session look like?

  • You show up at our studio at the time we agreed on, load in, set up, do a sound check and get used to playing in our space. Once everyone’s ready we record (there’s fireworks, explosions, rousing applause). Once everything’s recorded you pack up and head out, we handle the back end, and keep in touch regarding next steps.

How long does a session take?

  • Unless an artist or band is planning on recording 5+ songs in one session, video session average about three hours. Our sessions are quick enough that you can come into town in the afternoon, do a session with us, then play a show in Philly that same evening!

Do you have a backline or do we need to haul all of our stuff?

  • We do have a backline, and a pretty good one too! For more info on what we have hit the gear locker tab. If you love your gear, feel free to bring it! Just a heads up, the studio is on the third floor of a building, so you might be giving yourself a bit of a workout! Unless you’re really in love with your full drum kit sound, it’s probably best not to bring it.

Can we do multiple takes during the session and pick our favorite?

  • Yes!, we allow up to 4 takes per song, and you can pick your favorite of the 4, that’ll be the one that gets used.

Is it possible to request audio edits to fix a mistake in my playing?

  • No, we don’t do any audio edits/comping/overdubs for these sessions, it’s a live session! Sometimes there’s a little mistake! That’s part of the charm!

If you send a mix and we don’t love it can we request mix tweaks?

  • Yes! if the mix tweaks are simple (turn up the vocal, brighten the guitars, etc) we don’t charge for them. If the requested tweaks are more extensive (multiple pages of super detailed and specific things), or if there are several rounds of tweaks, there’s a potential for an extra charge per song.

If we’re not happy with how a song turned out on our end, can we cut it from the session afterwards?

  • Absolutely! However, because our rates are for the sessions and editing, we can’t offer any retroactive discount or refund.

We’d love to do a session but can’t afford the full price, is there anything we can do?

  • We’ve always tried to make sure that anyone who wants to can do a session with us, that’s why we’ve kept our rates as low as possible. If you’d struggle to afford a session with us but want do one please let us know! The financial support fund is directed predominantly for POCs.

I have some fun ideas for my video session, can we do something you don’t normally do on one of your sessions?

  • Definitely bring it up! We have our base recording process pretty hammered down, but we’re always open to ideas and love to help fulfill your creative vision.

We’re a really amazing band, we’re so so so important and famous and our music will be remembered for generations, can we get a free session in exchange for promotion from us?

  • If you can convince our landlord to stop charging us rent, you can have a free session, absolutely!

How do the sessions get posted? Can we request something specific?

  • Normally we post the full session on our youtube channel, and a teaser clip on our Instagram. We’ll also send the edited video file to you for you to do what you like with. If you want us to only post specific songs from the session we’re happy to do that. We’re also happy to not post at all, if you wan’t to do all of your posting and keep it exclusive to your pages feel free, just credit properly!

We have a specific date in mind to post our session, can you accommodate that?

  • Yes! as long as that date is at least 1 month after the session is recorded.
